Hey Paul, excellent photography you have. This portrait photograph at the top of your page, how did you light the side of his face as to no have a shadow grill across his face. I just don't get where that light source is coming from. You've traveled to some really cool places, great job.

Valdudes, first thanks for checking out my images. Honestly, I wanted the cool effect of the light falling across his face in shadows but was having a problem with him moving so I just moved the light source closer to the sculpture to avoid the lines. The more specular the light is the more the shadows come out. When I had the shadows the light source was about 30 ft away.

In the name of progress?
I grew up in the country, loved it. Of course I left there for college and really don't get back much. Recently I had the chance to come home and watch some Spurs games with Darren. Well it seems someone pimped out my childhood and like they say...you can never go home again.

As I was driving home all I can see are the roofs of homes where trees used to live. Just AWESOME! What a great idea, strip the land of all the trees and pile houses on top of each other and plant some twigs. How could anyone say " I have had enough of the city, I think I will move out to the country then I will move into a neighborhood in so crowded I can't breathe.
I know most everyone lives in big cities and deal with this alot. I just wasn't ready to see this happen so fast to my home.
After I got past the shock of looking at all of this crap going up I thought I had better shot pics that remind me of home.
Like my kids, I spent much of my childhood outside. Many days spent on the river or at the lake.
In Texas it gets hot so everyone heads to the river. Josh explores a damn north of San Antonio.

Great dog, would run after anything I threw including a rock I tossed into the river. He found it.
The kind of driveway I was used to growing up.
Great store, a lot of beer has been consumed there. People from Texas are fanatics about the state and the flag. Thank goodness it is easy to paint.

A friend of mine has a small building behind his house he calls the 'Man Barn' Basically it is a place to tap a keg of beer and bar-b-que. I just liked the decor.

Thats my trip down memory lane. Thanks for looking.

Was going to stop in for a beer but the kids were with me so scratched that idea.

Yeah, they're really going nuts on that entire 281N corridor up through Bulverde. It's insane. The entire Northside is being razed and "renovated" at an alarming rate. The "backroad" I used to take to my parents' home in Bergheim (Bulverde Rd.) to avoid traffic on 281 is now jam-packed with subdivisions and strip centers, traffic lights, blah, bah. Sucks ass.

There's this little ravine near my hometown that I used to explore, build forts, and generally just be a kid... well, recently a company thought it'd be a great thing to build a subdivision in the ravine because it had such a good view.
Well, I think I could have dealt with that... had the company not gone bankrupt and left a ravine - stripped of its trees - with half finished buildings.

Such is progress sometimes...

I empathize with you, man.

Dude same thing happened to the property I grew up on. They cut down the redwoods my grandpa had planted 50+ years ago, went bankrupt, and left a bunch of house foundations and pipes sticking out of the ground. WTF is up with this crap?!

i watched the town i grew up in go from 30% build out to now ... 2%. amazing.

luckily, they protected a lot of open space and our beloved oak trees!

that said ... driving through the willamette valley in oregon last week ... was a total treat to the eyes and to the senses. it's nice being around nothing.

The trees are always the first to go so they can plant a twig to replace them. The first shot is of a military base so the trees are safe there.

Same thing happened to the town I grew up in, just overrun with cookie cutter homes so close together you can hear your neighbor take a piss, strip malls all along what used to be a desolate two-lane road. The river looks very nice, a calming escape from all the other noise. Mmmmmm the "Man Barn" is making me hungry!! I want some BBQ!!!

The best part of the Man Barn was the keg built into a refrigerator.
